This specification describes a reflective metallic pavement striping tape which is designated for delineation of construction zones during asphalt overlay work.
The pavement striping material shall consist of a white or yellow weather and traffic-resistant reflective film on a conformable metallic backing precoated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive.
Surface preparation is important for proper performance. The surface must be clean and thoroughly dry, with an ambient and surface temperature of 35 degrees F and rising. Never apply tape over loose or caked dirt, gravel, oily residues, flaking paint or other foreign substances that will interfere with proper bonding. Gloves should always be worn when unrolling tape to prevent the edges of the tape and cores from damaging the hands. Always butt ends of the tape; never overlap. On long continuous lines, splice the tape every 12-18 feet. Be certain all points of the tape are in full contact with the substrate by tamping firmly or rolling over installation with a vehicle tire. A firm bond is absolutely essential.
Color: The striping material shall be of white or yellow color as specified for pavement markings.
Reflection: The striping material shall contain an exposed lens retroreflective system.
Adhesive: The striping material shall have a precoated pressure-sensitive adhesive which shall not require a liner for protection from contamination, pre-adhesion or blocking within the roll nor require activation procedures.
Application Properties: The material shall adhere to asphalt and concrete surfaces when applied according to manufacturer's recommendations at surface temperatures down to 50 degrees F and shall require no protective devices such as traffic cones or barricades.
Conformability: The striping material shall be thin, flexible, formable and following application, shall remain conformed to the texture of the pavement surface.
The average thickness of the material, as determined by five micrometer readings, at 5 different areas of the marking material shall be not less than 12 mils.
Removal: Removal after application shall not be required for successive asphalt overlays.
Durability and Wear Resistance: The striping material applied in accordance with the manufacturer's recommended procedure shall be weather resistant and show no appreciable fading, lifting or shrinkage during the useful life of the line.
General: The striping material as supplied shall be of good appearance, free from cracks and edges shall be true, straight and unbroken. The material shall be available in rolls and there shall be no more than 3 splices per 50 yards of length.
The striping material shall be packaged in standard commercial containers so constructed as to insure acceptance by the carrier and prevent damage during shipment and storage.
The striping material as supplied may be stored at temperatures up to 100 degrees F for periods up to one year.
